The lonely village of Achnasheen is a community with spectacular surrounds but so remote that the village was not reached by a proper road until 1819.

Achad-na-sine translates at "The field of storms” in Gaelic. The community was at on time a place where cattle drovers rested their charges before continuing on to the market atInverness.

The same railway line that links Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh serves Achnasheen. Kyle was once the terminal for the Isle of Skye. Queen Victoria visited the village in the 1860’s, arriving by train from Inverness, She noted in her famous journal that apart from the Innthere were just two cottages in the village. Things have not changed too much in the intervening years as the resident population is still fewer than 30!
